  1. Pain is the last symptom of dysfunction. A patient’s back is often restricted or unstable for months or years before it presents as a problem and they show up in a chiropractor’s office. The absence of pain, does not mean health. If you take a pill and the pain goes away, the dysfunction that caused it still persists.

  2. Athletes use chiropractors to stay well and perform better. Athletes choose chiropractors because we are movement specialists. These days it’s far more common for major athletes and sports teams to keep a chiropractor nearby to help prevent injuries.

  3. The body performs as a cascade of events that all start with proper control by the nervous system. The nerves that travel through and control every function of your body originate at the spinal cord and their transmission may be disrupted if the joints of the surrounding spinal column are not moving properly. This disruption in biomechanical integrity combined with altered physiological function is what chiropractors call a subluxation.

  4. Doctors don’t do the healing. Sorry to disappoint you, but a chiropractor will never fix your back. What we are able to do is restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do.

  5. Chiropractic is for all ages. Many seniors aren’t aware of the benefits that chiropractic care can provide. Not only can treatment help them with pain relief. But, it can also increase range of motion, balance and coordination. There is also no patient too young for chiropractic either! Chiropractors check infants' moments after birth for misalignments of the upper vertebrae that may occur as a result of the birth process. In addition to supporting overall health and well-being, parents also take their children to chiropractors to encourage healthy brain and nervous system development.

  6. We know about more than your backbone! This surprises many people who had no idea that chiropractors give advice on nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle. They also screen for conditions unrelated to the musculoskeletal system and refer out to other practitioners when necessary.

  7. Successful chiropractic patients accept responsibility. In most cases, one doesn’t acquire back pain overnight, and it’s not going to go away overnight. If a weak core from years of sitting at your desk is to blame for the additional stress on your joints, I would expect an adjustment to provide relief, but once the condition is no longer exacerbated, I would most definitely prescribe some exercises for you to do at home. But, if you’ve been given homework and you don’t do it, remember that this has to be a team effort!

  8. Chiropractic may help you get sick less. Studies have indicated that adjustments consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain, and may also enhance the production of immunoregulatory complexes important for healthy immune system defense.

  9. “I heard I’ll have to go forever” is a myth. You may want to go see your chiropractor forever once you’ve started because you didn’t realize how great getting adjusted is. But your doctor won’t expect you to come for continuous care without symptoms. Generally, if you come in with pain, once you’ve been treated for your initial complaint, you’ll be scheduled for a few more appointments to make sure proper motion is being maintained, then it will be recommended you return occasionally to be checked just like you would go to the dentist to get checked.

  10. Adjustments don’t hurt. There is no bone snapping involved! The neck adjustment some chiropractors use causes anticipation for many new patients, but is actually much gentler than they imagined. The sound an adjustment makes is called a cavitation and is only space being created within the joint causes gasses to be released from the joint capsule, which creates the popping or cracking noise. Most people after an adjustment describe the feeling as being “lighter” and being able to stand up taller.

Chronic low back pain is a common problem that has often becomes a challenge with time away from work and a significant economic cost. Two common treatment choices are spinal manipulation and prescribed exercise.

Because it chronic lower back pain is a difficult for so many people and society as a whole, a review of 3 previous studies related to effective treatment was performed and published a few months ago.

The review of the research found:

  • One study said that spinal manipulation was more effective
  • One found that therapeutic exercises had better outcomes
  • The third study found both interventions had equal effects in the long term

At Priester Chiropractic, with over 30 years of experience, we simply ask, why only one? Why not do both and then add other proven treatment modalities – like clinical massage therapy and/or the tingling of a TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). Depending on your particular situation, we can employ many  methods to optimize your chiropractic care.

If you are interested, here is the  study  that I mentioned

If you are experiencing pain in your spine, especially in the neck and lower back, trigger points are most likely contributing. Spinal misalignments are often caused by trigger points in the small, intrinsic muscles of the spine. A trigger point, also known as a “muscle knot,” is a patch of muscle tissue in spasm. Studies show that the majority of the population experiences trigger points that contribute to some sort of back pain.

When you get a Chiropractic adjustment, it restores the proper functioning of the spinal joints. But without addressing the trigger points, the small spinal muscles recreate the spinal misalignment all over again. The trigger points create tension in these muscles resulting in the spinal facet joints – joints that connect each vertebrae – not opening and closing properly. It pulls the spine out of alignment, and your pain returns. To effectively address this type of back pain, a clinical massage therapist can locate and release the trigger points in the small spinal muscles. When combined with TENS and a chiropractic adjustment, as we do at Priester Chiropractic, you can achieve pain relief that sticks.

At Priester Chiropractic, we employ a clinical massage therapist that is outstanding at finding those trigger points contributing to back pain. Most insurance plans will cover a number of sessions of clinical massage.

Clinical verses spa massage:

In clinical massage, the ultimate goal is to achieve a focused, measurable clinical outcome where the therapist employs a particular evidenced-based therapeutic modality in order to address trigger points causing misalignment, and ultimately, pain. Therapy sessions are 15-20 minutes, and are focused on functional outcome.

Although a clinical massage therapist and a spa massage therapist can, and do, practice all types of modalities in both industries, the key difference is the focus. In spa massage, the therapist concentrates on the satisfaction of the client. The session is more intuitive, aiming for a relaxing atmosphere where the luxuries such as high-end linens, music, aromatherapy, and table warmers are employed. It is not covered by insurance and is often costly. Don’t forget the tip, as they are generally expected.

At Priester Chiropractic, Dr. Priester expertly employs clinical massage therapy as an adjunct to your chiropractic adjustment. If you are having back pain, addressing trigger points may just be the key to a successful adjustment that lasts.

Medpay, or medical payments coverage, as part of your auto insurance provides an extremely low-cost option to ensure your medical bills are covered should you be in an auto accident – regardless of who is at fault. MEDPAY will pay your medical bills even if you are at fault. Furthermore, usage does not increase your premium whatsoever!

For $20 per year, you can have $1000 in medical expenses covered immediately, and for $30-$50 per year, you can have $2000 to $5000 coverage. The majority of individuals opting for medical payments in North Carolina carry at least $5000.

What to do if you are in an auto accident:

If you are in an auto accident, make sure you always obtain an accident report.  Report an accident to the police and your own insurance company. If the injury occurred on someone’s property, immediately notify the owner or manager of the property.

If you are injured, call 911 or go to the ER immediately. Secure the areas of injury and seek medical help.

Schedule an exam with a chiropractor within 24 hours of an accident. Most often, pain from whiplash after an auto accident takes 24-72 hours to set in, and untreated injuries can lead to long-term spinal problems. Consultation with Dr. Priester is free.

Remember: Just taking pain medication and muscle relaxers may mask an injury. Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong, so just masking pain with medication is not treating the injury. It does not correct the cause of the pain. (See our blog post about whiplash). At Priester chiropractic, we have helped hundreds of patients who have sustained injuries in an auto accident.

Consult with an attorney. Most attorneys provide a free initial consultation, which helps you understand your rights. Many insurance companies may ask you to sign a release from further liability after offering a small amount of money, usually a few hundred dollars. However, once you have signed a release or cashed a check, you can’t go back and ask for more, even if you’re still hurt or get worse (especially if your injuries are left untreated). Regardless, medical payments (MedPay) will be available if you carry this on your policy, but your medical needs may exceed your benefit amount. So make sure you cover your bases.

Do not miss your scheduled chiropractic and / or medical appointments.Follow your doctor’s treatment regimen in order to take care of your injuries. Otherwise you may create the false impression that your injuries were not serious or that you weren’t serious about getting better. It may also appear that you made yourself worse by not adhering to the recommended treatment.

Call your insurance agent today to see if you have medical payments coverage, known as MEDPAY! Whether or not you have healthcare insurance, Medpay through your auto insurance pays for treatment without up-front fees! At Priester Chiropractic, our office will work with your attorney, insurance adjuster, or private insurance company to avoid payment of services out of your pocket!
